A Must Read for Changing/Understanding the ViolenceA Must Read for Young Adults, Parents, Teachers, and Everyone Wanting to Learn How to Truly Change Our Violent Society
RISING ABOVE THE VIOLENCE speaks to all of us: the young adult just emerging on the road to life and the well-traveled adult who's just trying to sort it all out. The content of the text is two-fold: a narrative of the author's life at the start of the book and then an explanation/description of the components of how we can rising above the anger and hurt we all face. As B.J. Phillips opens her life to us, we read without pausing in utter awe and almost unbelief of her triumphs through God's Grace of what would seem to be unsurmountable trials and difficulties. Through her life we find evidence and confirmation of the promises of God. And, then through reading the remainder of the book, we are given hope that there truly is a way to change ourselves and the lives of others. A great, easy-to-read text for young parents, teachers, and just anybody wanting to 'see the light' in this society of darkness and violence.

Rocks, Minerals and Fossils of the World
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (April, 1990)
Average review score:

This is the best introductory guide I've ever used. You can throw away those rock and mineral guides you've been collecting through the years; this well-written and well-thought out guide makes them pale and obsolete. I bought this for myself, then needed another one for a young niece who was captivated by its straightforward style and unbelievable photos. It is clean and organized and easy to use as a reference. It would also make a great text for self-education as it places rocks and minerals in context, including photos and descriptions of famous cliffs, sills, and other geologic formations around the world.

Roots of Strategy: The 5 Greatest Military Classics of All Time
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (March, 1985)

The clearest translation of Sun Tzu's The Art of War.Firstly, I've read many versions of The Art of War by Sun Tzu and they all seemed to be translated by someone with Chinese as their native language, rather than English. This translation is as clear as they get. Napoleon's maxims are short and sweet. The other works contained herein are also easy to read and are packed with simple, eternal principles of warfare.

Storyline ....... here is the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Reunited with Luis de los Santos, the man who shunned her years before, Elena suffers a double blow when she discovers that Luis belongs to another ... Sultry and exquisitely beautiful, Elena was sought after by every man in Mary Tudor's court, but only one held her heart. As golden as the sun, Luis de los Santos had given her a taste of ecstasy in his strong arms, but he offered illicit passion instead of a wedding ring. Dirven apart by prive, they would be reunited by destiny on the sun-drenched plains of a Spanish rancho. Now Luis belonged to another, but his forbidden love for Elena knew no bounds, obeyed no strictures. Side by side they would battle the dangers of their turbulent era and forge a new life together ..."

The most user-friendly glass book ever written!!!!Finally, a glass book where you don't have to guess what the picture is!!!! Each illustration has a caption, telling what the item is, along with the vital statistics. No more flipping from page to page to find out what it is, or worse yet, a picture full of glass and no list or caption. The illustrations are incredible. Not only has the author researched his subject thoroughly, the photography will dazzle you. Thank you Philip Hopper for one of the best depression glass books I've seen yet!!!! I sincerely hope you will write more of these high quality glassware books!!

Ring of Truth: A Translators Testimony
Published in Paperback by Harold Shaw Pub (March, 1900)
The collection begins dealing on more "modern" ground with Baumlin and Baumlin's essay which deals with Hamlet. I admit to not having yet read Thompson's essay, "Ralph Waldo Emerson and the American Kairos," because I saw the title of the next and became intrigued. Gregory Mason's "In Praise of Kairos in the Arts" has a beautiful and distinct message about the lack of modern art which resonates and has the ability to transcend time. This essay in particular has the most general appeal, in my opinion, and may actually be a proper starting point for those unfamiliar with kairos in general.
Honestly, this is one of the most useful and enjoyable books I have picked up in a long time, and I look forward to finishing the three essays I skipped. It is the perfect marriage of a good read and an educational one.
